English Proficiency Policy
The University of Richmond values proficiency in multiple languages and diverse educational experiences across different cultures and countries. To ensure that students are prepared for our rigorous curriculum, we require that a student whose first language is not English submit proof of English proficiency. Richmond accepts official score reports from the following English proficiency tests: IELTS, TOEFL, and Duolingo English Test. We will waive the English proficiency requirement if you have been enrolled in an academically rigorous, English-medium secondary school for at least 4 years, or by obtaining an A or B equivalent grade in AP, IB, or A-level English courses. Additionally, waivers will be applied for the competitive scores outlined below. If you qualify for an English proficiency waiver, the waiver will be applied after an initial review of your application verifies eligibility. Verification is not immediate; a pending waiver will not prevent your application from being reviewed.
Here are the guidelines for competitive scores that fulfill or waive our English proficiency testing requirement:
• 100 TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition
• 7.5 IELTS or IELTS Indicator
• 135 Duolingo
• 28 ACT English section
• 660 SAT evidence-based reading and writing section
The University reserves the right to require additional information to demonstrate English proficiency.
